    SYNOPSIS
Alden: The Story of a Pilgrim Family; from the Mayflower to the Present Time with Autobiography, Recollections, Letters, Incidents, and Genealogy of the Author, Rev. John Alden, in His 83rd Year. CD-Win/Mac

ALDEN: THE STORY OF A PILGRIM FAMILY; FROM THE MAYFLOWER TO THE PRESENT TIME WITH AUTOBIOGRAPHY, RECOLLECTIONS, LETTERS, INCIDENTS, AND GENEALOGY OF THE AUTHOR, REV. JOHN ALDEN, IN HIS 83RD YEAR. CD-WIN/MAC

Author: Rev. John Alden Pages: 446 Pub. Date: (1890) 2009

Reverend John Alden has brought together in one volume a wide variety of information on the Alden family, including his own autobiography, genealogical information on his own close relatives and the early descendants of John Alden of the Mayflower, and dozens of well-told stories on many topics. The author was born in 1806 in Ashfield, Massachusetts, a seventh-generation descendant of John Alden of the Mayflower. In 1889 he wrote his autobiography, to which he added much useful ancillary data. Alden became a Baptist minister and as such travelled widely in New England, as a settled minister at times, and at other times as a missionary. He had a great facility as a gatherer and teller of tales, and as a result the story of his live is much more engaging than similar accounts written by his contemporaries. The last quarter of the book provides a brief history of the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony, with brief biographies of some of the Pilgrim leaders, followed by an account of the immigrant John Alden and his children. There are also short sketches of other Alden descendants of interest to the author. Two sections have important data on this branch of the Alden family which may not be available elsewhere. Reverend John Alden included reports of the fiftieth wedding anniversary of himself and his wife in 1883, and also the twenty-fifth wedding anniversary for one of his sons in 1884. To each of these accounts he appended dozens of congratulatory messages from friends and relatives. These messages contain many biographical and genealogical details on close relatives, including place of residence and married names for the women. The author also compiled a complete genealogy of all the descendants, as of 1889, of his father, John Alden, who had been born in 1761. This compilation traces all lines, male and female, and provides many dates and places for vital events which may not have been publicly recorded.
