    SYNOPSIS
District of Columbia: Washington: Proceedings of the Orphan’s Court, Washington County, District of Columbia, 1801-1808. Wesley E. Pippenger

Proceedings of the Orphan’s Court, Washington County, District of Columbia, 1801-1808 - Wesley E. Pippenger. The Orphan’s Court of the District of Columbia, as constituted by law in 1801, continued until 1870, when its functions were transferred to one of the Justices of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia holding a special term for probate business. Several separate journals, which now can be found at the District of Columbia Archives, make up a series of minutes for the Orphan’s Court of the City and the County of Washington, District of Columbia. The journals are presented as full transcripts, with spelling, capitalization and punctuation preserved. Of particular interest in these proceedings is the recording of over eighty apprenticeship records that are not found among the regular bound books of apprenticeship indenture records. Genealogists will find useful information for constructing the sequence of events involved in settling estates of deceased persons — some cases continue for many years. The minutes show connections of seamen with particular branches of the military and specific vessels; or even birth dates, residences or assigned trades that are customarily documented in apprenticeship indentures. (1998), 2015, 5˝x8˝, paper, index, 98 pp.
