AncestorStuff.com :: Ireland :: IRELAND: DERRY: EMIGRANTS FROM DERRY PORT, 1847-1849 (BAKER)

    SYNOPSIS
IRELAND: DERRY: EMIGRANTS FROM DERRY PORT, 1847-1849 (BAKER)

compiled by the Research Centre, Derry Youth and Community Workshop, Ltd. and edited by Dessie Baker

Closson Press originally published this book in 1985. Out-of-print for several years, it is back by popular demand. Interesting facts about emigrants passing through the port of Derry, Ireland during the “famine” period add historical value to this list of persons who came to America. Most passengers landed at Philadelphia, however, St. John, New Brunswick, and New Orleans were other ports to which ships of the John and Joseph Cooke company carried emigrants. Most of the passengers came from the poorer areas of Donegal, Derry, and Tyrone. Accommodations and provisions aboard ship are described. Each passenger list of the shipping company is shown separtely giving the name of the ship, dates of he voyage and port of destination. The main passenger’s residence is usually shown followed by names of accompanying passengers, ages for most children. To make the work more useable, a computerized index of every passenger was made referring to page number of the listing. Information comes from microfilm copies of the J. and J. Cooke firm, held by the Record Office in Belfast. 7,839 names of emigrants.
