These books are abstracts of the pension applications now on file in the National Archives in the files of those soldiers who applied for a pension from the state of Kentucky based upon their service in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Indian Wars.
The state from which they served was not necessarily Kentucky, but they were living in Kentucky when the call for applications to be filed was given. Those wishing to apply had to fill out an application form, take someone with them who could witness to the fact that they had served and where and when. These hopeful pensioners put much of their own personal family history in these papers, including when and where married and to whom. They often listed their children and sometimes even their ages. Many times they revealed much in these papers of interest to genealogists.
An every-name index is included giving the names of all people listed in the pension application itself, as well as the signer.
