Westward Ho! but where? Have you ever wondered why your ancestor decided to move-and even more importantly why did he choose ____? How to books are not a modern phenomena. Real estate brochures are not new. This 1817 volume provides a description of the western states and territories-one state so new it is still unnamed-and discussions of soil, climate, diseases, vegetable mineral and animal productions as well as extensive descriptions of the rivers, lakes, roads and other items that impact travel. We learn about the price and quality of the land, forts and Indian tribes in the area, settlement patterns, and trade and manufacturing opportunities. The book is filled with interesting details: improved farms in Warren County, Ohio, are selling for $15; it takes from 4 to 6 weeks to go from Mobile to Fort Jackson on the Alabama River, Gallipolis, Ohio, has 76 houses, a courthouse and a nearby vineyard that is expected to produce a 1000 gallons of wine and Springville, Indiana, first settled in 1816 by Samuel Owens, James Garton and John Gray, now contains 50 houses and 250 inhabitants.

Although brief (less than 10 pages) the directions to emigrants provides a glimpse into the world of the family making the decision to move. The mode of transportation, time of departure and final destination were all decisions that were made-often without practical guidance. Bad water, poor or no food, even the time of year selected for travel impacted the final results. Whether you want a detailed description of life in Ohio or a verbal map of the best way to get from New York state to Ohio and Indiana, this book can provide the answer.
