NEW YORK: ANNALS AND OCCURRENCES OF NEW YORK CITY AND STATE, IN THE OLDEN TIME; BEING A COLLECTION OF MEMOIRS, ANECDOTES, AND INCIDENTS CONCERNING THE CITY, COUNTRY, AND INHABITANTS… CD-WIN/MACAuthor: John F. Watson
Pages: 410
Pub. Date: (1846) 2008
Watson has brought together in one place a wide range of information of different sorts on the earliest years of the state and city of New York, covering the periods of discovery and settlement, with information on the Dutch and English settlers, as well as on the indigenous Native Americans.
The author divides the volume into "Book First" covering the state and "Book Second" for the city. In the section on the state, he describes the period of discovery and also has separate sections on each of the earliest settlements, including Manhattan, Albany, Schenectady, and Brooklyn, as well as a number of the Mohawk Valley towns, such as Rome, Schoharie and Canojoharie.
For the city, along with the basic history, he covers a great variety of topics, such as "Memorials of the Dutch Dynasty," "Gardens and Farms," and "Longevity."
In many places the presentation is supported by verbatim transcriptions of colonial documents and by excerpts from the earliest newspapers.
