Western New York drew settlers from New England, Pennsylvania and even as far as Virginia, as well as eastern New York. This 1400-plus page history of the area, liberally sprinkled with illustrations including maps, exquisitely detailed, is fully searchable, giving researchers access to the wealth information linked to the many personal and place names mentioned in its pages. The Genesee country, described as all of New York west of Seneca Lake, includes the present counties of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Ontario, Orleans, Schuyler, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates. In more ancient terms it is described as that territory included in the original Phelps and Gorham Purchase.
The compiler begins with geology and an extensive history of the Indians in western New York, laying a foundation for the history of the settlement of the area described in detail on a county by county basis. Although the history of each of the counties is carried to the twentieth century, the focus is upon early settlerswho they were and when they cameand the events that occurred early in the history of the towns and villages within the countythe first tavern, the history of the establishment of the various churches and early businesses. The names and dates of service of town and county officials from the first to those who served in the twentieth century are frequently noted. Mini-biographies of individuals which often give their date and place of birth and brief histories of schools, academies, fraternal organizations, and other institutions of note round out each county history.
In addition to the county histories, there is an extensive history of Rochester with separate chapters devoted to the pioneer era, judiciary and bar, education, military, churches, civic development, banks, the press, commerce and industry and the medical profession, again, liberally sprinkled with names especially of those in the early years.
Unlike the other counties, Livingston County history is spread over a number of chapter covering Indians and early settlement, organization and miscellaneous, towns, education, religion, transportation, early courts and lawyers, medical, industries, banks, newspapers, military. The depth of coverage provides great detail including the names of shoemakers, merchants and hotel keepers, and church histories that include the names of the pastors.
Two chapters are devoted to the War of 1812. A separate chapter covers the oil industry found in southwestern New York; another Indian myths and legends of Steuben County. Five chapters covering events that impacted the early settlement including the 1779 Sullivan Expedition, the Phelps and Gorham Purchase, the Holland Purchase and the Big Tree Treaty round out the contents.
