This set of volumes provides a complete transcription of surviving birth, marriage and death records for all towns in the five counties of Rhode Island, from the earliest days through 1850. The entries are arranged by county, then by town, then by record type, with citations to the original sources.
Four of the volumes are devoted to four of the counties (Bristol, Kent, Newport, Washington) and two volumes contain the more numerous records for Providence County. Within each county the records are arranged by town, and within each town there are two sections, one for marriages and one for births and deaths. (In a few towns, including especially Providence, there are separate sections for births and deaths.)
The marriage records are arranged alphabetically by surname, and then chronologically within each surname. There are two entries for each marriage, one under the groom’s surname, with the bride’s name following, and one under the bride’s surname, with the groom’s name following.
The births and deaths are also arranged by surname. In this case, however, the births and deaths are further arranged by family group, with the family groups listed in chronological order of the earliest birth within each family group.
All entries are accompanied by a citation to the volume and page from which the entry was taken, in the record books of each town. There are separate indexes for each town, by surname only.
